What is Backlink?

A backlink is a hyperlink from one website to another. Backlinks act as endorsements: high-quality, relevant backlinks are one of the strongest off-page ranking signals in SEO.

Why Backlink matters

Search engines treat a link from one site to another as a vote: the more relevant and trusted the linking site, the more it counts. Backlinks remain among the strongest ranking factors for competitive queries, and they compound: pages that rank earn more links, which keeps them ranking. Quality beats quantity by a wide margin, and a handful of links from sites in your field are worth more than thousands from directories and link farms.

The anchor text and the page it points to matter as much as the domain. Natural profiles mix branded, generic and descriptive anchors and point at useful pages, not only the homepage. Bought links with exact-match anchors are the pattern Google's spam systems are built to catch, and a burst of them can cost more than it gains.

Example

Two links to the same guide:

From a hosting company's blog: "…as explained in this guide to TTFB…"
From a link directory page listing 300 unrelated sites

The first passes relevance and trust; the second passes almost nothing and can look like spam.

Common mistakes

  • •Buying links with exact-match anchors; that is the pattern spam systems detect.
  • •Chasing domain-level scores while ignoring whether the linking page is relevant.
  • •Never checking the profile, so toxic links from scrapers and spam networks go unnoticed.
