What is Meta Description?

A meta description is an HTML tag that summarizes a page's content in roughly 120–155 characters. The meta description often appears under the title in search results and influences click-through rate, though it is not a direct ranking factor.

Why Meta Description matters

Google treats the meta description as a suggestion, not a rule: it rewrites the snippet for a large share of results, usually when the tag is missing, too long, or does not match the query. When your description is used, it is your only sales pitch on the results page, and a specific, benefit-led sentence can lift click-through rate measurably on pages that already rank. Since more clicks at the same position mean more traffic without any ranking change, it is one of the cheapest wins in SEO.

Length is about pixels, not characters, but around 150–155 characters is the practical ceiling before desktop results truncate it with an ellipsis; mobile shows even less. Front-load the answer or the benefit, mention the page's main term naturally, and give each page its own description: duplicates across pages are a common reason Google ignores them.

Example

A description for a pricing page that states the offer and removes a doubt:

<meta name="description" content="Plans from $19/month, free checks with no card. Compare Starter and Growth: monitoring, AI search visibility, white-label PDF reports.">

150 characters, the price and the free tier up front, and the terms a searcher would use.

Common mistakes

  • •Writing one description and reusing it across dozens of pages.
  • •Stuffing keywords into a sentence no human would click on.
  • •Running past 160 characters so the call to action is the part that gets cut off.
