The 12 Best Free Website Audit Tools in 2026
Updated · 12 tools · prices checked on each vendor's own site on 6 October 2026
Most “free” website audit tools are a trial, a one-page teaser or a crawl capped at a few hundred pages. That is fine if you know the limit before you start. This list says exactly what each tool gives you without paying, what the first paid plan costs, and whether it looks at AI search yet, which in 2026 is the part most audits still skip.
There is no single best tool. Google’s own two (Search Console and PageSpeed Insights) belong in every toolkit; the rest differ in what they cover. Pick by the question you need answered: “what should I fix first?”, “what does Google see?”, “how fast is it?” or “what is broken on page 3,000?”.
We make Webmatik, and it is on this list. It is held to the same rules as every other tool: what is free, what it costs, and where it falls short, in its own entry below.

How we put this list together
We read every free tier and price on the vendor’s own pricing or product page on 6 October 2026, and opened the no-signup reports of SEOptimer and WooRank to see what a free user actually receives. Tools are ordered by how much a site owner can learn without paying: breadth of the free check first, then how usable the result is without an SEO background. Prices are in the vendor’s list currency, before VAT. Free trials do not count as free plans. We update the list when a vendor changes its free tier.
Tools we left out, and why
WooRank’s free review is a teaser: a score and the on-page section, with the full report behind a trial, and paid plans start at $89.99 a month. GTmetrix no longer has a free plan, only a trial, and its reports need an account. SE Ranking and Sitebulb are excellent but offer trials, not free plans. Sitechecker’s free check covers the homepage only, though its $5 one-time full-site audit is worth knowing about. All of them appear in our Seobility, SEOptimer and WooRank alternatives lists.
Which free tools check AI search?
AI assistants now answer a growing share of “which tool should I use” questions, so it matters whether ChatGPT or Gemini can read your site and whether they mention you. Among the free options: Webmatik’s free check scores AI readiness alongside everything else; SEOptimer adds a GEO section to every report; Seobility’s checker tests whether AI bots can reach the page; Ubersuggest’s free audit includes an AI visibility section; and Semrush and Ahrefs each have a free AI visibility checker. Search Console now reports your impressions in AI Overviews and AI Mode.
Readiness checks tell you whether AI can reach and understand your site; only real prompts tell you whether it recommends you. For the second, see the best AI visibility and GEO tools or our GEO audit.
Frequently asked
What is the best free website audit tool?+
It depends on the question. For what Google sees, Google Search Console and PageSpeed Insights are free and authoritative. For one report that covers speed, SEO, AI search, design and conversion with a ranked list of what to fix, Webmatik’s free check (3 a month, no card). For a raw technical crawl, Screaming Frog (up to 500 URLs) or Ahrefs Free for sites you own.
Is there a completely free website audit?+
Yes. Google Search Console, PageSpeed Insights and Lighthouse are free with no paid tier, and HubSpot Website Grader is free with an email address. Most other tools are freemium: a capped free plan or a single-page check, with a paid plan for more.
Can a free tool audit my whole site?+
Up to a size. Screaming Frog’s free version crawls 500 URLs, Seobility’s free plan 100 pages per crawl, AuditZap 10 pages, and Ahrefs Free uses 5,000 crawl credits a month on sites you have verified. Larger sites need a paid crawler.
How often should I audit my website?+
Monthly, and after any redesign, migration, CMS update or change to robots.txt. Search Console alerts you to indexing problems in between; a full audit catches what it does not cover, such as speed, design, conversion and AI search.
Prices are as each vendor lists them, before VAT, checked on 6 October 2026.
