What is Pillar Page?
A pillar page is a comprehensive page covering a broad topic that links out to and from related, more specific articles (a topic cluster). Pillar pages build topical authority and improve internal linking.
Why Pillar Page matters
A pillar page is the comprehensive, evergreen guide to a broad topic ('website performance'), and the articles that cover its sub-topics in depth (TTFB, image optimisation, caching, Core Web Vitals) link to it and from it. The structure, often called a topic cluster, does two things: it shows search engines that the site covers the subject thoroughly, and it concentrates internal links on one page that can rank for the broad, competitive query while the cluster pages rank for the specific ones.
The pillar should be genuinely useful on its own (it is not a table of contents) while pointing readers to the deeper pieces at the right moments. Keep it updated as the cluster grows; a pillar that ignores its own newest articles loses the linking benefit.
Example
One cluster, mapped:
Pillar: /learn/performance-speed "Page speed: the complete guide"
Cluster: /learn/performance-core-web-vitals
/learn/performance-images
/learn/performance-caching
/learn/performance-hosting-ttfb
Links: every cluster page → pillar; pillar → every cluster pageThe glossary terms in each article link into the cluster too.
Common mistakes
- •A pillar that is only a list of links with no substance of its own.
- •Cluster articles that never link back to the pillar.
- •Several overlapping pillars on the same topic competing with each other.
