What is Core Web Vitals?

Core Web Vitals are a set of Google metrics measuring real-world user experience: Largest Contentful Paint (loading), Interaction to Next Paint (responsiveness), and Cumulative Layout Shift (visual stability). Core Web Vitals are a confirmed Google ranking signal.

Why Core Web Vitals matters

Core Web Vitals are Google's attempt to reduce 'is this page pleasant to use' to three numbers measured on real visitors: how fast the main content appears (LCP), how quickly the page reacts to a tap or click (INP, which replaced First Input Delay in March 2024), and how much the layout jumps while loading (CLS). Each has a 'good' threshold, and Google evaluates the 75th percentile of visits per page group, so a page passes only when most visitors have a good experience.

They are a confirmed, if modest, ranking signal, and a far larger conversion signal: slow, jumpy pages lose visitors before the content is read. The field numbers come from the Chrome User Experience Report, which needs enough traffic to report; lab tools such as Lighthouse estimate them on a simulated device and are useful for diagnosis, not for the verdict.

Example

Passing thresholds, at the 75th percentile of real visits:

LCP ≤ 2.5 s (needs improvement up to 4.0 s, poor above)
INP ≤ 200 ms (needs improvement up to 500 ms)
CLS ≤ 0.1 (needs improvement up to 0.25)

A page with LCP 2.4 s on desktop but 4.8 s on mobile fails on mobile, which is what Google's mobile-first index sees.

Common mistakes

  • •Tuning the Lighthouse score while the field data, which is what Google uses, stays poor.
  • •Measuring only the homepage; Google groups pages, and a slow template drags the group down.
  • •Fixing LCP by lazy-loading the hero image, which makes it worse.

How Webmatik checks it

Webmatik reports real-visitor Core Web Vitals from the Chrome UX Report (Real visitor load time, Real visitor click response, Content jumping during load) next to Lighthouse lab figures for mobile and desktop, and the SEO category flags failing vitals as a ranking-signal issue.
