What is AI Citation?
An AI citation is a reference or link to a source that an AI answer engine includes when generating a response. Earning AI citations requires authoritative, factual, well-structured content that models can attribute.
Why AI Citation matters
When an AI answer includes a link, that link is a citation, and it is the AI-era equivalent of a first-page click: the reader can follow it, and the model has publicly attributed a fact to you. Citations are rarer than mentions. A model may name a brand from memory, but it cites a page only when it retrieved that page while answering and judged it the best source for a specific claim.
That makes citations a content problem more than a brand problem. Pages that get cited state a fact, a number or a procedure in a self-contained paragraph under a descriptive heading, are dated and attributed, load quickly for crawlers, and do not hide the answer behind a wall of introduction. Original data (a study, a benchmark, a survey) is cited most of all because it cannot be found elsewhere.
Example
A paragraph built to be cited:
## How long should a meta description be?
Around 150–155 characters. Google truncates longer snippets on desktop
and shows even less on mobile; the limit is pixels, not characters.Question as the heading, answer in the first sentence, the nuance after.
Common mistakes
- •Burying the answer under three paragraphs of preamble.
- •Publishing undated, unattributed content that models cannot weigh for freshness or authority.
- •Serving a different page to crawlers than to visitors, so the cited passage does not exist.
How Webmatik checks it
The AI citation links check on the Growth plan records, for every tracked prompt and provider, whether the answer linked to your domain and which URL it cited, so you can see which pages models trust.
